Literacy rate to scale up to 80 percent by 2012

To boost literacy rate in Karnataka from the present 66.64 per cent to 80 per cent by 2012, the state government will launch a Rs 167 crore programme on 7 August 2010. The ‘Sakshar Bharat’ programme will be implemented in 107 taluks spread across 18 districts to transform 36 lakh people as literates. Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa will inaugurate the programme under which the targeted people would be provided 200 hours of teaching over a period of six months. The literacy rate among men in the state stood at 76.10 per cent, while it was 56.87 per cent among women.
